Objective: Aging has been linked to a high prevalence of cognitive impairment, which, in turn, has been related to balance disturbances and falls. Falls in older adults are a major public health concern as approximately 30% fall at least once each year. Older adults with cognitive impairment have higher of a risk of falls than normal older adults. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the effect of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) on balance control.
Method: This study was carried out in the Dongdaemun district of Seoul. The sample for the cross-sectional part of the study was 316 community-dwelling elders aged 65 years and older. Balance capabilities of the subjects were evaluated after the assessment of cognitive impairment using the Mini-mental state examination (MMSE). The subjects were subdivided into two groups, MCI and non-MCI, according to 24 points of MMSE. Balance capabilities were assessed using the timed up and go test (TUG), Berg balance scale (BBS), and balance ordinal score of Short physical performance battery (SPPB).
Results: The subjects were divided into two groups: 40 subjects in MCI group (19 Conclusion: These findings suggest that older adults with MCI have more deficits in balance control than those with non-MCI. Therefore, MCI adults need more help to transfer or gait than healthy adults and have more secondary falling risk.
