Objective
To investigate the condition of ongoing rehabilitation therapy in residential facilities for the disabled in Korea, and evaluate related domestic welfare policies. Methods Twenty-two therapists and 1018 people with disabilities participated in the survey. The survey for therapists consisted of five categories: general facts, treatment statistics, individualization and evaluation of rehabilitation treatment, and program operation and others. The survey for the disabled also consisted of five categories: general facts, rehabilitation program, goal setting and post treatment evaluation, and participation of doctors of rehabilitation medicine and others. Results Therapists were each responsible for 9.2 people with disabilities and treated 2.5 of them simultaneously in a 36-minute daily session. The programs were operated without standard guidelines and, even when problems occurred, they were rarely solved according to the standard manual. On average, the disabled performed rehabilitation for 83 minutes a week. As for the treatment methods, disabled participants received individual treatment (73%) and group treatment (47%). About quarter of the disabled did not have a shared goal with their therapist (24%) and or have a post-evaluation conducted (35%). Twenty-one percent of disabled indicated that the current treatment was inappropriate. Conclusion A standard guideline on rehabilitation programs, which supplements a professional workforce, should be provided. The experience and merits that clinicians have should be reflected in policies and taken into account by the government. |
